Miami Moving Tips

Expert Advice from 23 Years of Moving in South Florida

💧 Tip 1 — Beat the Miami Heat and Humidity

Miami heat is no joke. Schedule your move for early morning — ideally starting at 7 or 8 AM — before temperatures peak. Stay hydrated and keep cold water available for the entire crew. For your belongings, avoid leaving packed boxes in a hot truck or garage for extended periods. Electronics, candles, vinyl records, and artwork are especially vulnerable to heat damage.

🏢 Tip 2 — Book Your Service Elevator Early

If you are moving in or out of a Miami condo or high-rise, booking the service elevator is one of the most important steps you can take. Most buildings require reservations 2-4 weeks in advance and strictly enforce time slots. Missing your elevator window can delay your entire move and cost you money. Contact your building management as soon as you have a move date.

📦 Tip 3 — Declutter Before You Pack

The less you move, the less you pay. Before you start packing, go room by room and separate items into keep, donate, sell, and trash. Miami has great donation centers including Goodwill, Salvation Army, and local churches. Selling furniture on Facebook Marketplace before your move can put extra cash in your pocket and reduce your moving cost.

🌀 Tip 4 — Plan Around Hurricane Season

Hurricane season in Florida runs from June 1 through November 30. While most seasons pass without major storms, it is worth being aware when planning your move. If a storm is forecast near your move date, contact your moving company immediately to discuss rescheduling options. At Miami Packers and Movers, we work with customers to reschedule at no penalty when severe weather is involved.

🚛 Tip 5 — Always Get a Written Flat-Rate Quote

Florida law requires moving companies to provide written estimates. Never accept a verbal quote. More importantly, always seek a flat-rate quote rather than hourly pricing. Miami traffic is unpredictable — an hourly move that should take 4 hours can easily turn into 7 hours with traffic, elevator waits, and parking challenges. A flat rate protects you completely.

📋 Tip 6 — Update Your Address Everywhere

Do not forget to update your address with the USPS, your bank, credit cards, employer, insurance providers, Florida DMV, and the IRS. Set up mail forwarding with USPS at least 2 weeks before your move to make sure nothing gets lost during the transition.

🐾 Tip 7 — Make a Plan for Your Pets

Moving day is chaotic and stressful for pets. Arrange for a friend, family member, or pet sitter to keep your animals away from the home during the move. Never leave pets in a hot car in Miami — temperatures inside a parked car can exceed 130°F within minutes. Pack a pet essentials bag with food, water, medications, and their favorite toy to keep them comfortable at the new home.

🏦 Tip 8 — Move Mid-Month and Mid-Week to Save Money

The beginning and end of each month are the busiest times for movers in Miami because most leases start and end then. Moving mid-month gives you more scheduling flexibility and often better rates. Similarly, Tuesday through Thursday moves are less in demand than weekends. If your schedule allows, choose a mid-week mid-month date for the smoothest experience.

🔒 Tip 9 — Verify Your Moving Company is Licensed

Before hiring any moving company in Miami, verify they have a valid Florida IM number through the FDACS website. For long distance moves, also verify their USDOT number through the FMCSA website. Unlicensed movers have no accountability — if something is damaged or stolen, you have no legal recourse. Miami Packers and Movers is fully licensed, insured, and has been operating legally in Florida for over 23 years.

📸 Tip 10 — Document Everything Before and After

Before the movers arrive, take photos and videos of all your valuable items and furniture. Document any pre-existing damage. Do the same when items arrive at your new home. This protects you in the rare event of a damage claim and gives you peace of mind throughout the process.
